Some usernames may be more than 5 characters and that would cause problems.

I could make it three lines e.g.

Steve Jobs and Mac OSX Tiger

lol - I see! That would be ok of course!

Could you have as many characters as in "Steve Jobs and Mac OSX Tiger" in the topic name? Or at least 25 characters?
THAT would be great! So visitor can read more and understand the topic better! I really love the concept of getting an overview of all the topics on the first page.

I think 30 would be too much. This feature has to be suitable for all forums. One thing I can do is add the topic preview e.g.
roll your mouse over one of the topic links here - You must be logged in to see this link.

Would that do instead?
