My Blog You must be logged in to see this link.

had something happen to it. I received an e-mail this morning that the political section has disappeared. It was between Everett Average Citizen Soldier and Sports. It contained 5 years of political info that mysteriously disappeared.

I am wondering if there is a way to retrieve that? Thanks, Miles.

If you deleted the category it would have deleted all forums and topics contained within it.

Hi, No, it was not deleted by myself or any of the moderators. I was wondering if there was a way to retrieve that data, maybe in administrative options. Thanks. I'm not ruling out a hack and would also like to know if there is some extra protection so this never happens again.

The forum wasn't hacked. The category was deleted by a forum admin/moderator. You can't protect against a feature a forum admin is supposed to have.

Do you have a backup system or a date that we an go back and retrieve files. It's disheartening that 5 years of correspondence has been deleted and hoping the forum company has some type of server backup. Thanks for any info you can provide.

It isn't our responsibility to backup your data or data you think is important.

There are backups but they are designed to restore the whole system. To do what you want to do would require us to restore the whole system to another server, identify the posts in question and then reconstruct the data on your live forum.

It is a considerable amount of work and would cost hundreds of dollars.

Thank you for the information.

Do you have a recommendation/thoughts on any effective strategy that we could put into place to back up our own data?

Let me look at it to see if I can come up with something that would restore the data.

Copying the data from the backup database to your live forum database is a big job and a bit risky. You could end up losing posts if I make a mistake and then I would have to restore that forum.

I can restore the forum to the state it was in on the 30th September quite easily. You would lose everything posted since then.

Alternatively I could restore the forum to a new forum e.g. called bbpolitical.forumco.com and you could use that but you would have two forums to maintain.

Tails,
If you are the "Super" Admin you can do this. All other Admins, Moderators, etc. do not have the option, and can not do this.
Go to the Admin Options (logged in as Super Admin), look in the right column, about 4th or 5th item down, you'll find the option to "Email all members".
