I definitely like the idea of having someone else host my forum so that I don’t have to worry about setting up the forum, update it with security patches etc.

What I don’t like is being locked to the company hosting my forum. Because of this, I would like to know if ForumCo provide its customers with a copy of the forum database in case I ever want to switch host or if I want to host the forum myself.

Of course, if the service is great and the forum speed is great too, I hope I will never need to do this.

So, does ForumCo provides a copy of the database any time a client requests it? If the answer is ye, what kind of database do you guys use?

Thanks

For security reasons we don't supply either. Sorry.

Databases are backed up weekly offsite.

Security reasons?

Why would me having a backup of my own data have any security implications?

A database holds more than what you would consider "your" data.

Two examples:

1. Privacy - members email addresses and passwords.
2. Security - Database structure, type, etc.

2. Security - Database structure, type, etc.

I edited your post because I don't appreciate suggestions on how to hack ForumCo.

If you want to be able to backup your own forum then you would have to host it yourself. Sorry but thats the way it is.
