The database server went down at 6am Sunday 24th April 2005 while backing up all forums due to insufficient memory. The server was unreachable until about an hour ago when normal service was resumed and was due to extremely high traffic at a time that it normally off-peak. We are investigating the possibility that it was a co-ordinated effort (Distributed Denial of Service Attack) to bring our servers down in response to action we took against the illegal use of our services earlier in the week.
There will probably be two short periods of downtime during non-peak periods in the coming days in order to carry out maintenance and hopefully prevent further attacks. If downtime can be avoided it will be.
I would like to unreservedly apologise to all of our users for the downtime and would like to assure everyone that we are doing everything possible to prevent further downtime from happening again.
If your forum is not back and working please post here along with any other comments you have to make.
Padriac, even tho this was a pain for us to have to go thru. I knew you were working to get them back up and running in the best time possible. I can't thank you enough for doing the job you do. I know in running my website and the forum on Perryville, nothing is easy when dealing with these kinds of problems. Again, thanks so much for the job you do! My forum is working great now! :)
I too knew that you were working hard to bring everything back up. I'm guessing you never get a day off!
I will with your permission copy your first post in this thread on the MOC forum to let our members know what happened and also let them know it may happen again in the near future in your effort to give us the best possible product.
I think ForumCo is great and recommend it whenever I get the opportunity.
The backup is due to run tonight. If something goes wrong we will be working on it straight away. We have put a fix in place but there is no way to know until it happens.
If all else fails, we will be back shortly. Use the newsgroups instead, they should still work.
Its the time of the week again when we do the database backups.
I have started the backups early today in the hope that they will complete early and not in the middle of the night. In the event of the backups causing a problem I will be notified immediately on my mobile phone (isn't technology wonderful) so that if I'm not already working on it I soon will be.
For information only -------------------- When a database is backed up it first checks for any minor errors in the database and fixes them. The database server then optimizes the database for peak performance. Then about 14 gigabytes of forums are backed up to another server so that even if the database server went on fire (it has happened, not to us mind you) we would be able to restore all forums.
