Padriac,
Yezid works in our IT dept...(posted the previous message...). I saw your reply but I don’t know if it is the ideal solution.
Let me explain exactly what we want to do:
As you might remember, we are setting up this forum for people to find information about (via links to websites and reference lists) and possible matches for housing (via other members’ postings) while completing our school's program. We would like only certain people to have access to the forum. Otherwise, as you might suspect, other schools could use it as a resource for finding housing and roommates OR unwanted real estate brokers, advertisers and such will get on the forum.
As we only want enrolled students, current students, alums and staff to be able to read and post information we would like to either have them need a password or not let them on the forum until I 'accept' them or approve their registration.
We don't mind if outsiders can view the home page but we want only people we 'allow' on via a password or other means of control to be able to read the threads, open links...in a nutshell 'use' the forum or read the information contained within.

Please advise the best way to do this. Thank you in advance. RL in New York.

There is no way to stop someone registering on the board but it won't stop you doing what you want to do. Un-registered users can read a board or forums without registering unless they are protected. How do you intend to verify who people are?

If you create two (at least) forums on your board. Leave one forum unrestricted and protect all the other forums via password or allowed member list. New users signing up will only be able to read or post to the one forum (not protected) where they could request access to the rest of the board. They would not have access to the protected forums on the board.

At any time, as an admin you can lock a member (which prevents them from posting) or delete them all together.

Padraic,
