Wendy, "How long", that is up to you.
This is something that each Admin does:
Log in and go to your Admin section. The sixth (6th) item down (on the right) on your Admin Options choices is “Avatar Setup”. From this option you will find the tools to upload your own images you want to use as avatars; “Add New Avatar”. The images will need to be hosted on the web; you use the URLs to them, causing them to appear as avatars for your members.
You will also find the option to load about 200 or so other avatars; “Mass Avatar Add”. Caution, many Admins are not happy with the avatars that the “Mass Avatar Add” provides. There are several posts about this subject within these Support Forums. You may wish to get your own images, something more appropriate suited for your forum’s concept?
Your “Help” section can advise you on the proper size each image should be for use as an avatar.

If I understand the mechanics of setting up avatars for my forum correctly, a member has to first find somewhere on the web to host their avatar.
Are there any free (or cheap sites) which would be hosts for the avatar images?

If the avatars are on the web, then they are already being hosted. All you need to do is copy the URL of/to the image, and as Admin add it to your available avatars list. You do this by using one of the options, from within the "Admin Options" list.
After making the image available; Then either edit the member's profile, giving them that avatar, or the member can edit their profile and choose the avatar.
NOTE: One draw back on using avatars (images) already found on the web is the fact that you have no control over how long that image will be on the web. Should the webmaster remove the image from the web, you will get a "Red X" box show up by your member's post instead of the image. It's really best that the Forum Admin do the hosting of the images in the overall long run.
You can do that (host images) by signing up for a "Free Website" at places like Yahoo for example, and/or other free accounts. (Caution, if you use a "Free" website account the allowed band hourly use allowance can cause the images to not be available at times. This would only happen if you are using animated graphics as your avatars or other images on your forum. It's the repeated animation pinging between the forum and the free host eating your hourly allowance up.)
Another option to control the image hosting is to use something like PhotoBucket type accounts for the images to be hosted at.
Hope this info helps you?
