Is there a way to enable only Admins and Moderators to use private messages?

Thanks,
Lady RV

Afraid not. Members can communicate with each other by email anyway so it would be pointless disabling it for them.

My members gain access to my forum only by email or advertisements. So The only way they would have access to other members' email addresses is at my forum. In fact, I advise my members to hide their email addresses. Disabling the private message feature would prevent spamming and cross-sponsoring as these tactics are considered unethical.

Padraic

I was somehow under the impression that the PM facility would not be part of the new version of Snitz forums until later. I notice we can do it here.

It looks like PM facility has been turned off at the forums I visit, though there is one member there who claims he can send and receive PM's. Naturally he attributes this to being an Mac owner (something to do with a special browser plug in that only works for OS-X - hmmm).

Does this sound right to you? I'm not an expert in these matters.

Vince, no one on your forum should be able to send private messages. It was only added to the new version recently.

It will be included (as you can see here) in the version I use to update all the forums.

That's odd, P. Why can Valiant's forum members send and receive PM's? And there are at least 2 or 3 members on my forums saying that they can.

Hmmmm.

Valiant is using the old forum software which includes pm's.

Ask the members on your forum how they are sending pm's. Ask for a link to the page where they are typing it when sending.

Hello I'm part of the Morgana crowd ... Padraic the people able to access PMs are using very old Netscape browsers ... is it possible that the Forum default (or index) file is set to identify browser type (and age) then redirect it to the appropriate start page for the user? If so is it possible that these ancient browsers are simply accessing the old PM system? I noticed that you kept the *.asp file names the same in general but changed the PM file to pm_view.asp ... I just thought that this would explain the problem.

Browser doesn't matter and the forum does not redirect according to browser type, version, etc. The forums should run on 99% of browsers without the need to design for specific browsers.

Yes its possible they are accessing the old pm system but it won't work. Ask for a working link to where they are using the pm's and you will get either a page not forund error or something like this

Microsoft VBScript compilation error '800a0411'

Name redefined

/morgana/inc_top.asp, line 19

Will it be possible to disable the pm feature on the new version? Unfortunately, there are some members at my forum that have used this feature to spam.

Padraic,

Any prospect on updating the forums to the newer version ( containing PM facility). It sounds like some forums have it already.

It is opssible to disable PM's in the new version.

The old versions of the forums have private messages and I hope to get Morgana's updated over Easter.

Is there a way to disable PM's on my version? I really need to do this because spam and cross-soliciting problems PM's create.
