For the past couple of months we have experienced varying degrees of speed in the retrieval of pages on our forum. It has slowly degraded to the point where we have members refusing to even try to access us anymore. Is anyone else experiencing this type of thing?

At first I thought it was just the variances that can occur on the INTERNET. But after seeing it just constantly continue to get slower and slower I now believe that it must be related to the ForumCO servers or access lines. I do not know enough about how this stuff works to explain it any better.

We have also experienced some strange situations within the various threads in the forum. We still get "double" registrations. Or at least what appears to be exact duplications. I suppose there could be some minor difference that we're not seeing any.

We also get from time to time a thread that that will show a NEGATIVE number in the amount of responses! That number will change from time to time. Normally it seems to go only to -3. No higher and then back to -1 or to 0. Then the next time we log on it shows the correct number!

Our major concern is the slow down of the Forum access. This includes the initial log on as well as individual threads once we get logged in. Often a user will simply "time out" when trying to post a reply. This is very annoying and our members are starting to rebel! Please let us know what is going on.

Thank you,
RVWheels, Montana Owners Club

Your database is huge, about 1.2 GB. I have never seen the CPU usage on any of our servers peak above 50% but when backups are being performed the forums will be slightly slower. Your forum is backed up daily at about 8am Florida time (from memory).

If you get wrong forum counts then run the Update forum counts in the admin area. If it times out on your forum, let me know.

Post any other problems in this thread.

Rich, The servers are in Sunnyvale Calif. DNS Web Address 64.7.192.162 The Server Errors are Microsoft if you subscribe to there Server Tech System. The error problems were reported by Microsoft in a problem report dated Nov 2006 under what Microsoft terms "Articles". The Article numbers are 293318 and 290211. Now if Formco will just put in the Server Service Pak updates we'll all be happy campers, and as i little side note i'll say it again. Thank you everyone for information on this forum. I'm due a new Monty come July and taking to the wide open spaces and will tell you now you have no idea how valuable all the information that you post has helped us as newbi gonna be owners.

Admin,
The above is a quote from one of our members. As you can see they are resorting to trying to figure out why the Forum isn't working like it should instead of posting about RV stuff! This is not good.

I have no idea whether the info posted is correct or not. I thought our servers were originally in Florida but they were transferred to Texas. Now this guy says he tracked them down to San Francisco! It doesn't really matter to us where they are.... we just need to them to work and work quickly. <G> Does the info about "Articles" assist you in any way? I have no understanding of this sort of thing. Just wish our people would not have to worry about making connections and just worry about RV things.

Sure hope you can get us on the road to recovery soon.

Thanks,

RVWheels for the MOC

You must be logged in to see this link.

First one has nothing to do with anything relating to your forum.
Second one is an article explaining how to get the latest patch for Sql Server 2000. The most recent patch available is dated May 6 2005 which we applied last year when it came out.

Our servers are always fully patched and up to date.

The main page loads in 33 seconds for me (logged in as an admin) and 0.2 seconds when not logged in at all. If you access the forum logged in as an admin extra database queries have to be run in order to display the admin icons for each forum. This will slow down the main page considerably compared to users not logged in viewing the main forum page.

You should be able to increase the speed up your forum by doing the following;

Archiving or deleting older topics.
Reducing the amount of forums & categories on your board.

I will run SQL Server Profiler and see if it suggests any changes to be made to your database which could improve performance.

Profiler Trace has been completed and I implemented two new indexes on database tables on your forum. Let me know how it is.

Oh and your database is 2 GB in size, not 1.2 GB.
