Just a couple of questions as I'm new to the Forum Admin scene.

I have only one troll who was harmless for a while until he picked a battle with one of my female members. He has PM'd me and stated his desire for her to experience bodily harm. He may be just full of it but the fact is he knows where she is and we don't know anything about him. I have locked his username and he just pops up as someone else. He does not have a static IP address and if he did is there any tool for us to block out by IP?

So here are my questions:

1. With regard to the threat is there an agency or someon I need to report him to? He may be full of crap but in this day and age if the woman turns up shot somewhere I'll feel very responsible for not having at least taken some measure.
2. Can we block out a person by IP address?
3. Do we have any other means of banning trolls from our forums?

I know there are going to be those that always come on to bust chops and that's not a problem but when they threaten my other active members it's really a bit of a problem.

On the same guy - can we limit how long after a post one can edit their post. This guy will go back hours/days later and change his conversation to make people look crazy!

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Email me a link to his most recent posts - helpdesk at forumco dot com

It is common practice for ISP to have terms of service which forbid harrassment, etc. of other people on the internet. Once you have his i.p. address I would report it to his ISP. I would also give the woman the details also so that she can report him to who ever she believes is appropriate. It is fully within the ISP's capability to report him to the police in whatever country they are. Supply as much evidence as you can. I will be making a complaint also.

The best way to deal with trolls is to approve all new members yourself. Lock anyone's account who gets out of hand. Its really easy to get around an i.p. ban. You cannot time delay post editing either.

As a first step, email me the link to his posts.

Thank you for your help. Just to update this has been resolved. As it turned out the person's mother e-mailed me he is someone with some mental disabilities and is getting help but gets out of control w/ communications sometimes. I spoke with both him and the mother on the phone yesterday. He IS off the forum and will not be returning.

Thank you for your advice. Hopefully, I won't have this situation again.

Glad you got it resolved. Its a prime example of how you can never know who you are dealing with on the internet.
