I'm trying to add to the description of one of the sections on our forum and get this message.

I think you get that error message when the description is too long.

IIRC, the maximum description length is 255, but I could be wrong.. no doubt Padraic or Richard can give a definitive answer.

It was long and that is probably what it was. Same thing happens with signature lines right?

Yes. A lot can depend on the amount of special characters in your description. As far as I know they can take four times as much space as a normal character.
