Dear ForumCo Admin,
I have e-mailed you about this, but thought I might post it here as well in case anyone else is experiencing similar.
Nearly every day I am experiencing brief spates (about 5-10 minutes at least ) where I can't download any ForumCO pages, e.g. You must be logged in to see this link. or Support forums.
Is this because of the routine maintenance or patch installations you've been mentioning?
Here is a typical example of a traceroute during this period. The hops commence in Australia.

More like a month, Padraic. Since that meltdown (and subsequent change of server?) last month, it's been happening almost daily for me... and I can tell you that for more than 2.5 years I have been logging on during the same periods each day. Maybe it is because of the increase of frequency of this error message, since last month, that I have noticed it. On some of these occasions, it doesn't even start with that "Cannot display page". Instead, the page appears to be downloading, the progress bar slowly creeps to the right, and then all of a sudden the page snaps back into "cannot display page" message. |

It does happen daily. 6 times a day to be precise. It has happened since almost near the start (8th August 2000) at the same times every day without change. The machine is not restarted, just the memory releasd from IIS (the webserver) so that it can be freed up and be put to good use.
However looking at your traceroute shows a missing server. There should be one more at the end before ForumCo and the time of the traceroute doesn't add up. When exactly did you notice it? |

Padraic,
I only started reporting this to you about...last week as I recall. But it started way before that. I think.. about the first week of this month or so, or Christmas / New year break.
Anyway, if/when it happens again, I'll see if I can e-mail you another traceroute, along with time of occurrence. I mainly posted this topic on the Support boards in case anyone else may have been experiencing similar occurrences.

It started in August 2000 and is supposed to happen. Its not something I can fix as its something I want to happen.
The webserver by default uses half of the memory available to Windows. We added extra memory and allowed the webserver to utilise virtually all of it. This enables the webserver to keep more asp pages cached (and ready for processing) when a visitor requests it. As you can imagine we get millions of pageviews every week (if not daily) and this can lead to problems with memory allocation if the webserver tries to cache them all. At the end of a four hour period when most (or a lot at least) of the pages in the cache are old, the webserver service restarts itself to free up the memory, cached pages, etc. and starts all over again.
I have ran the server without the restarts for a period of a week and it resulted in slower forums.
The process only takes about a minute to restart but it would be at least two minutes before the "surge" of pages queued are served.
For the record the times of restart are (Florida time GMT-6hours) 11:06pm 03:06am 07:06am 11:06am 03:06pm 07:06pm

Thanks for your patience and your efforts, Padraic.
I will take note of those times.
Kind regards and thanks again
