When I use forum code by clicking on the icons at the top of the new post screen it works fine, yet if I type out the code then it doesn't work; [color=green]like this[/color].

Is there a reason for this?

You've typed it wrong there. By clicking color and choosing green, the tag only has the word green in it, so get rid of the "color=" bit.
