Hey Padraic,
Would it be possible to add some new smilies? I've come across some boards that allow you to add smilies to the default list of smilies.

Sorry for the short answer but there is alreadya well documented way of doing it.
Upload all the smilies you want to your own webspace and let you users know they may use them. Include the code to use each smilie on a webpage if you wish. |

The length of your answer is not the problem.... I did not ask about the "well documented way of doing it". If you were to take a look at my previous post, you should be able to clearly see that I already know how to upload smilies to my own webspace. I am using a similar procedure anyway.
I was asking if would be possible to add a feature that would allow us to add smilies to the default list.(The same way we can upload different message icon smilies directly onto our forums.) This would be more convenient for our users than having them go to a different webpage. |

Uploading images to our server is not really an option. It would take up too much space, bandwidth and has security concerns. I've learned that from allowing users to upload images to customise their boards. Other board providers charge a monthly fee to host images on another server but by far the easiest and best solution is to upload them to your own server and provide the bbcode to use them on your board.
One thing I would consider is making a smilies webpage (hosted by us) for all ForumCo users to use or extend the smilies currently in use.
Could you email me the smilies you want to use? |

Just checking to see if this you are still considering extending the smilies. I emailed some smilies to you a while back. |

I know, I have the email saved. I just never got around to it. The only thing I can do with it at the moment is to include the smilies on a webpage at ForumCo with a link to that page when you post.
If I have time i will try to include a javascript so that it will insert the code for the poster when the smilie is clicked.

Bad news I'm afraid. All the smilies are protected by copyright;
This is a quote from one of the websites.
quote: No part of this website or material contained therein may be reproduced, sold, distributed (electronic or otherwise) or used for any means whatsoever without the express written permission of Emoticons 4 U
I cannot infringe on an authors rights by using their work without permission. The best thing to do would be to find more smilies that are in the public domain (usable by anyone).
In the meantime I will start work on integrating extra smilies into the forum. |

I do understand about copyrights. The following sentence from the website led me to believe that some of the smilies were public domain:
quote: All the the emoticons/smiley's are either copyrighted by the creator or are public domain.
Thanks for your work, Padraic! |

I saw that but it doesn't say which ones :)
If I get the page finished using test smilies it will be just a matter of substituting the smilies you want included for the test ones.
If you can find smilies that you are sure are in the public domain I can add them otherwise you will have to seek permission (which I will have to verify). Here is a rather long list of smilie websites - You must be logged in to see this link.
I think if you post the ones you want (web address to the smilie) on this thread it will be easier for me to keep track of them.
Any other users that wants to add smilies should post the url's here also. |
