Hi,

I just tried setting up a new group category within our forum for new members and having done so couldnt see it. I then moved a folder into it and moved a post into the folder and it was still not appearing. It then created a new post elsewhere and moved that into the folder and tried clicking active topics but that too had vanished.

Clearly the group and folder exist and can be seen in some of the admin functions such as the group sort order and yet it is like a black hole in being invisible and anything that goes into it is too.

I am totally perplexed by the whole problem. Do you have any suggestions as to what to do to make the group/folder/posts visible?

The forum is You must be logged in to see this link.

Thanks in advance for your help.

You lost me on the explanation of what you did. Maybe, if you read this "Old" topic, about how to create a New Category and Forums within the category, you will find where you made a mistake in what you were trying to do.

It does not pertain directly to what you explain you tried; but it simply explains how to create a "New" category and add forums within it. (The 2nd reply, "New Forum Setup", is what you should read)

If this does not help you, post back.

Hi, Thanks for your prompt response. Unfortunately it didnt really help as I did do exactly what your instructions say when setting up the new group. I am anyway very familar with the admin side of the message board and have set up numerous groups and folders over the several year period that we have been using your software for our message board.

I am pretty sure there is either a bug or something wrong with an obscure setting on our board that I can find because the problem we have right now makes no sense and has never happened before.

Let me try and explain again.

Today I set up a new group. Having done that I couldnt see it on our message board. I know it exists because it is there under some of the admin options for example you can set the order for it under "category/forum order configuration".

I thought maybe you culdnt see it because there was no folder in it so I created a folder under an old group that is visible and transferred it into the new invisible group. The new group still couldnt be seen on the message board.

I then thought i would try and move an existing post into the folder I had just set up within the invisible group. So I did that and still it wasnt showing.

Finally I then set up a brand new test post elswehere ..... moved it into the folder in the problem group and then clicked active topics. The new test post didnt show as an active topic even when I extended the timeframe using the drop-down menu to since yesterday.

I would be happy to let you have admin access to our message board so you can go in and check the setting and witness the problem for yoursleves. I cant see any other way forward really. Is this possible?

Thanks.

You do not setup or add categories from the “Admin Options” section.
1. You add categories my using the “Pink Folder” icon on the far right of the top line of your forum.

You do not stick folders into anything, categories or (sub) Forums of categories.

2. You add and create Forums under categories, by using the “Pink Folder” icon on the far right of the Category's name line.

3. You add topics (and replies to topics) under forums.

What is up with “Sticking a folder in any where? This is where you lost me. You do not stick a folder any where on the forums.

You may be familiar with the Admin side of these forums, but that isn’t where, or how, you setup a "New Category" or sub-forums within it. I thought that was what you are trying to do.

Guess not.

I did use the pink folder to set up the group and it isnt visible on out message board. I checked to make sure it existed by looking under admin options and it plainly is there under Category/group order configuration and you can assign an order to it.

I have since then been trying to find a way to make it visible so I tried creating a folder using the pink folder icon elsewhere, (since the new section doesnt appear and therefore nor does its pink folder) and moving it into there. It was possible to move folders into the invisible group but this didnt make it visible.

Finally I tried putting a new post in there which I knew would show up under active topics. Again I couldnt do it directly in the correct group/folder because they were not visible so I created it elswhere and moved it. Not only did the group remain invisible but the brand new post didnt even show up under active topics once in that folder.

There is genuinely something wrong here. I have done my best to explain something which is frankly inexplicable beacuse I have created many groups, folders and made over 1,000 posts and have been the main administrator on this board for several years so I do know how it works under normal circumstances.

I really would be grateful if you would take a look at our message board if at all possible and then you will see exactly what I mean if it isnt already clear. I am happy to give you access to do so if you dont have it. The group that i created that cant be seen is entitled "new members".

GoldThumb,
did you create a Forum in the new category? You would need to do so before any post will appear.
Unless I'm still confused, it sounds as if you are not seeing the the New Category line. And therefore can not use the "Pink Folder" on it to create the forums within it that you want. Is that correct?

I can't see your forum, unless you open it up to all for me to do so. I don't join every forum to help everyone needing help, Sorry.

If you open it up, I'll look at it, then you can change it back for members only afterwards.

I'll check back in about 10 mins to see if you have posted back.

Sorry I wasnt online when you replied to my last post.

Yes I created the group/category by clicking the uppermost right pink folder. I then created a forum elsewhere (using a pink folder at the forum level) and moved that into the new members category using the edit forum properties icon and altering the group/category link from there (obviously only possible because the new members group exists albeit in ghost form only).

Then I did similar with the test post. I created it elsewhere in another folder by using the "new topic" function follwed by the edit topic properties icon to move it into the folder I had just put under "new members".

So in other words I know the new members group with a folder and a post in the folder exist because although I cant actually see them on the message board I can see them on the admin lists "Category/group order configuration " and when in edit mode at forum level and topic level it available on the list of all groups/folders that are available.

Although our message board is restricted for essential security reasons I have made it open for a period so you can assist us with this problem , but with respect unless you have either moderator or admin rights I dont think you will be able to see anything much other than to confirm that there is no new members section there. I appreciate you cant register to everyones forums but if you need to do so to help us and are prepared to make an exception then register and I will authroise you and give you admin rights to allow you to investigate further.

I looked at your forum. And now see that all appears to be okay. Your new “”New Members” category is displayed; and the two (current) topics, with post are visible.

Did you find what the problem was; if so what was going on?

I did register on your forum. However, there may be no need for me to complete the process now?

Unfortunately no the problem remains. I think you were looking at an old section called "members" not the one in question "new members".

I authorised you and made you adminstrator on our message board so you can investigate. Let me know if I can be of any further help. I am on msn messenger under my email address if you use that and have any questions or observations.

Many thanks.

I still think I'm seeing what you wanted there. Here is a snapshot of what I see, pertaining to the "New Member's" category.
I also see the "Member's" and other categories as well; signed in or not.

Thanks very much Ron.

I have now managed to work out why I couldnt see it and that is the message board was filtering on the selection show "all groups" and not "all categories you have access to". The latter reveals it.

What is the differrence then between a group and a category (I thought they were the same) and how do I change the setup of the new members category to make it appear whichever of these drop-down options members use please?

I'll "PM" you, and answer your questions on your forum. However, yes, Categories and Groups or the same thing; however there is a higher area (so to say) that divides categories into groups.
I try to explain this further in a PM on your forum.
