Some people manage to register without my approval (which is what I want) and others end up in my 'members pending' folder for me to approve manually. Why is this and how can I make it so everyone can register without my approval?

You must be logged in to see this link.

Thanks

Ali

I have found that many times those who start the registering process fail to follow through with registering. This is sometimes caused by the new want-a-be member accidentally deleting the auto e-mail sent to them, or their SPAM blocking programs preventing them from receiving the e-mail confirmation notice. They have to receive this notice and follow through with confirming that they are who they say they are, and that they want the membership. If they don’t, then the process is not completed and therefore you have a new member waiting for approval.

Many times, people think they can give a false e-mail address when they sign up. This cannot be done, the confirmation e-mail will not be received by the correct person. However, you can as the administrator, approve the membership and allow the membership, even if they have given a fake e-mail. I’ve made this mistake myself in the past, and allowed a new member that later turned out to be a trouble maker. In my case the member posted some obscene sex images and other undesired post on my forum. Which, I deleted, along with the person’s membership.

If a person wishes to give you a fake e-mail, you probably don’t want that person to be able to post on your forum anyway.

You may wish to do as I have on my forum; I posted a topic which explains, to new members registering, that they must give the correct e-mail when signing up, and that they must follow through with the process to complete the registering. This way they understand and expect an e-mail, and that they must follow through with its instructions to become registered on the forum.

This process helps you from receiving undesirable members, as well as weeding out those who would post SPAM, as well as other stuff you wouldn’t want on your forum.

Hope this helps.

One more suggestion I might make to you is this:

If you find that you have a new member that has not completed the registration, and you’re really not sure why; you can see the e-mail address that they gave; so you may wish to contact them by using your personal e-mail, or another e-mail account (like a Yahoo e-mail) to see if they changed their minds, or if they did not receive the confirmation e-mail?

If you receive an undeliverable e-mail back, you then know they gave a false e-mail. Or you may receive an answer back from them telling you they never received the “auto” sent e-mail. If they still wish to be a member, you can then approve the membership yourself, or not.

I have a member who lives in Germany, that I really wanted to join my forum, but she did not followup with the forum registering. I sent her an e-mail and ask her if she still wanted the membership. She said she did, and that she had accidentally deleted the forum’s confirmation e-mail. I approved her after I learned this.

I have done this to others in waiting, and found that it was not a legitimate e-mail. I removed those from my member pending registration list.
