Would it be possible to have the Discussion groups (in Group Category Menu) show unread posts? Basically, get rid of the generic folder that is shown and put the purple one in there if there are unread posts since their last visit.

Sorry. I misunderstood. You cannot have those icons on that page.
The link you supplied - tenwest.forumco.com/default_group.asp only contains categories, which in turn contains forums, which in turn contains posts. Only the forums contain posts and therefore can only show whether there are new posts or not.
