Is it possible to specify when a new user joins what groups they have access to?

I have 3 forums categories on my forum.

1 for regular members
1 for guild members only (but they can view both this and regular one)
1 for officers only (they can view all 3)

is there any way to default to the first for new users and allow me to give access to the other people based on the group they belong to?

I tried to search and couldn't find it.

No but it is one of the features I would like to add. I just have to work out what the database changes are.
