If I upload and overwrite an existing smilie using a gif image of exactly the same dimensions, it shows up on the 'Image Customisation' page but does not show up forum pages themselves. Am I missing something here; is it not possible to replace default smilies with your own? And if it is, can you use animated gifs?

You should be able to replace them. What is your forum url ?

There are two "sizes" when it comes to images, the width x height size and the file size.

My guess is that the filesize is too big. Can you upload one or two of the animated gifs somewhere so I can see them ?
