Can I just clarify that the pruning topics suggestion applies to free forums only?

If it does include pay forums then I think you should email all forum owners to let them know that a poll is going on.

It applies to all.

I'm going to upgrade all the forums to the new verison. It includes an archiving feature
which doesn't delete topics but moves them to another place but still can be viewed and searched like this forum. Goto the main page and look for the letter "A" on the right of every forum. Those are archived threads.
