This is a weird question, but I’m curious. I started this forum after shopping around and using several others. I had a handful of people helping me and when we decided to go with Forumco, I set up their accounts myself so that I could bring their previous posts over here. To do that I followed these steps: (1) I registered with their username but one of my email accounts (so I’d get the password). (2) I logged on as that person and copied their previous messages to the board. (3) When I was finished posting, I changed their email address to their own and made the password something generic. (4) I then notified them that they could begin posting again and gave them the username and password I had assigned. All went well. No problems.
Last week, after asking some questions on the Support Forum, I discovered that I did not like the way I had set up the categories and topics and notified everyone that I was shifting things around and that they should stop posting until I was finished (this is still the experimental group). They were still using their generic passwords, so I was able to logon as each person and repost when necessary. It worked perfectly.
Here’s the part that puzzles me. I went in to change the usernames of two new experimental members who had not followed directions (we’re trying to get everybody to use their full firstname and lastname). To do that I copied their messages, deleted their accounts, and reregistered them. I tried using the same procedure as above. But at the end of the process, something seems to have changed. When I got to step 3 and changed their email address and made the password generic, I got the notification that a new password would be sent to their new email address. I never got this message before. I’m assuming that the generic password was changed and the program substituted its own. Is that correct? I have no problem with that. I just need to know why I couldn’t duplicate my first efforts.
Now I see that I should be able to change usernames without all that effort. A recent post from Richard states:
"As the administrator you can change the password of a user, just modify their account and change the password, you can then send them an e-mail with this new password. Most likely they e-mail address that they have entered is invalid. You can see the person's e-mail address (and modify it if need be) on the Modify User Screen as well. And, you can change the user's username on that screen to."
I haven’t been able to change usernames. Is Richard correct in saying I can? If so, how?
I’m also wondering if an email address and password change are made at the same time, if the password sticks or if a new computer-generated password is sent to the new email address. I’m pretty sure it’s the latter.
We’re about finished with the experiments, but if I need to change an email address, password, or username in the future is there a way for me to do it easily?

Well, I do know that as an admin, you should see the link to "Members" on the top right of the page after you login. From there, you should be able to change other users usernames and passwords.
I would like to also know, however, how to change *my own* username, as the Forum Administrator. I've looked everywhere, but cannot seem to do this.
Good luck,

Thanks, I hadn't noticed the ability to edit a members profile from the Members List. I've been making changes the hard way. I think you solved my problem.
Perhaps I can solve yours. I'm the administrator of the board, but when I signed up for the account, I used geaonline as my username. I decided that I wanted to use my own name instead and since I have more than one email address, I changed the email address on this account to the one I use less frequently. Then I created a new account using my own name as username and the email address I use most frequently. I gave this account admin privileges and now that's the one I use.
I've noticed, however, that Admin Support is very willing to change your username for you if you request it, so either way you should be able to do it.
Thanks for the advice. You did solve my problem. I just got a request from a new member to change her username and was able to do it. It only took a few seconds and everybody is happy. |

| Although I know how to edit a user's prfile now, I'm still curious about what happens when you change a password. Does the computer generate a new password, or can I change the password and inform the user what it is? I couldn't do that on Friday and I was surprised because I know I did it about a week ago. |

You should be able to change a password by editing a members profile (from the members page).
If you change the email address a random password is sent to the user at the new email address (for verification). |

| OK, I guess I was trying to change both password and email address at the same time. That's why I got the ramdon-generated password. Thanks! |
