When i get a spammer I usually authenticate their membership then lock them out.

However I'm now getting a lot of spam from the same IP addresses. Is there a way to lock out specific ip adresses?

We seem to have picked up a spate of posters who all have the .cn ending to their email and unpronounceable usernames.

I am having a real problem with porn spammers lately. We have been investigating the matter, and I've been checking the ISP numbers to see whether they are bots or human, and so far my team and I have found over 30 members to be spammers. so we lock them out, and placed their user name in the banned name filter, and several variations of spelling of the user names. but the keep coming, and it is hurting my forum becasue really, on me and one other person are up keeping and "policing" the forums, out of my team of about six. and like, Dr Chou En Ginsberg mentioned, we can't be there 24/7. is there anyways to filter out atleast spam bots? currently we are having our members add more detail to their profiles, Human spammers will be able to compensate but i do not believe the bots will be able to. are there any other suggestions?

I've got a troll on one of my forums who turns out to the chairman of my local tenants' association! A nutter who likes to boast he's an ex-policeman and as it turns out trolls forums as a hobby. He tried mine. I've outed him, but he keeps coming back using other people's computers (and therefore fresh IP addresses!). I know it's him. He's a real nuisance.

I've posted this little essay about trolls:

    TROLLS

Recently we've had incidents of malicious folk trolling this forum.

Trolling is a game about identity deception, albeit one that is played without the consent of most of the players. The troll attempts to pass as a legitimate participant, sharing the group's common interests and concerns; the forum members, if they are cognizant of trolls and other identity deceptions, attempt to both distinguish real from trolling postings and, upon judging a poster to be a troll, make the offending poster leave the group. Their success at the former depends on how well they - and the troll - understand identity cues; their success at the latter depends on whether the troll's enjoyment is sufficiently diminished or outweighed by the costs imposed by the group.

Responding to a troll is very tempting, especially since these posts are designed to incite. Yet this is where the troll can cause the most harm, by diverting the discussion off the forum topic and into a heated argument. Others who have responded in person to forum harassers have been mail-bombed or have had their own system administrator - or boss - contacted and told that they were making trouble on-line. This is what is currently being done to me.

Contacting the offender's system administrator is usually done as a last resort, when it is clear that the rules of forum etiquette have been transgressed. How seriously the system administrators or other authorities take such complaints varies greatly from provider to provider. Most do nothing. Trolling is seen as a negative but inevitable cost of living in a free society.

Trolls can be costly in several ways. A troll can disrupt the discussion on a forum, disseminate bad advice, and damage the feeling of trust in the forum community. Furthermore, in a group that has become sensitized to trolling - where the rate of deception is high - many honestly naive questions may be quickly rejected as trollings. This can be quite off-putting to the new user who upon venturing a first posting is immediately bombarded with angry accusations.

Trolls can also have a damaging impact on a new forum. A newcomer may go in and see little but pointless aggressive argument and so be put off ever entering the forum again. This appears to have happened here. However this forum is in it for the long-term, will recover from these attacks, and in time will become a strong local meeting-point.

p.s. There is some entertainment to be had from the forum They banned me! dedicated to trolls. Beware - It's quite offensive!

Fair enough ... that would simplify matters.

The spam button could only be for mods and admins.
