Sometimes a page of a topic will increase it's width creating a right side within the monitor that can only be seen then with horizontal scrolling, Why does this (only) sometimes happen and how can I prevent it from happening?? Thanks...

Usually a horizontal scrolling bar appearing is caused by someone posting an image that has a pixel width of a greater value than the column width of the forum's default setting. Even though the image may be within another post on the page of the thread, it will effect the width of all post within that same page, above and below the post with the "wide" photo.

Members should be advised of the maximum width to have images they post on the forum; the size to keep photos below, to avoid causing a scroll bar to appear at the bottom of the page. Horizontal scroll bars on a forum's page makes the reading of post more difficult that the column having its normal width. Who wants to slide the text of a sentence back and forth to read it.

There can be other things (other than a wide image) that can effect the web browser to form a horizontal scroll bar. If you don't have an image on the same page, post a link to the page involved and I will see what other things might be causing the bar to appear.

Thanks RUlmer, that much I was aware of, My problem seems to ocuur when somebody posts a youtube video with embedding, The thing is that the youtube video is always embedded with the same size and is not too large as to create horizontal scrolling but does anyway, For example here...

Suddenly it is now also happening with pages that have no pics, videos or the like, for example...

If it is You Tube videos that are causing the problem, they are contained as a whole object and can not be split; just as an image can't be split. I suggest that only the videos that have a width setting that will not widen the forum's page column be posted. However, saying that, I also realize that the poster may not be able to, or be paying attention to, the size setting of the video they are posting within your forum.

It may be something that you'll have to work out within your own forum policy. For example, maybe a forum or topic, directly designed and for the You Tube videos to be posted in. Or maybe have the posters only post the link to the You Tube videos, rather than embed them?

Sorry, but there is not anything that can be done to keep a browser from creating a slide bar at the bottom when an image or such, that is wider than the default area, is placed on the page. It's the browser, not the forum's code that's doing this; just as it is designed to do.

I don't see any slide bar at the bottom of this page when I view it?

You might want to check the "Screensize" setting (it's the very top line of the posting window) on your forum. Some member may be setting the width of their post done at a wider setting than most people have their browser default settings. (Or I guess that a very small setting might also cause a problem as well; but not a slide bar at the bottom?)

You'll see the "Screensize" setting when you go to post a topic or reply, etc. Currently in this reply, on this forum post, I see a 800x600 setting.

Strange but I get a slide bar at the bottom when I click on that page (and some others as well), All posts are using the 800x600 setting and if I change it to a smaller or larger one the posting box prior to being posted changes sizes but not the posted post itself and remains with the horizontal scroll no matter what I do, Again I find this strange because that one particular page has no pics or videos, Any ideas?

After taking a closer look I found that the width increase only happens when someone is logged in, Guest viewers of the same page that are not logged in do not get that horizontal scroll, if that helps identify the problem...

...btw, my forum is also monitored 24/7 by friends (and enemies) afraid to admit to it and I was thinking maybe they set it different for their bigger screens and it somehow carries over to mine, like a glitch in the system, Is that possible?

If you are using Internet Explorer 9 it is possible that the browser is causing the lower scrollbar. There is some discussions found throughout the web about similar type problems that others are having. One person suggest to not use Internet Explorer 9's compatibility mode; "make sure you're not using IE9's compatibility mode".

Not with the PC I am using today, out of town will get back to you in a couple of days,

It is basically that a bothersome horizontal scrolling someimes activates with some of the posted messages pages, but only some, not all, with no apparent pattern, and seems to only happen with moderators/admins, Guests and regular members do not have this happening with the same pages,

Later...

I am not sure how to make a screen shot, Again the horizontal scroll option only appears on some topics widening the screen so you must scroll left and right to read the messages within those topics and only happens to moderators/admins but not to members or guests who are always shown the messages automatically condensed so that no horizontal scroll is shown,

You can see it for yourself as a guest by clicking You must be logged in to see this link. and then comparing the topic when logged in as Podge who, is still listed as a moderator,
